Goals for Student Social Activities
1.    To serve the school community by providing positive, safe and enjoyable activities
2.    To develop responsibility and leadership among the student event organizers
3.    To promote fellowship and a positive school atmosphere
4.    To give students a voice in the selection and character of student activities
5.    To offer different kinds of activities in order to meet a wide variety of needs and interests

In addition to spiritual activities, sports team and fine arts programs, we have a good variety of social events for our secondary students. Each year, student representatives on the Student Activities Committee plan a number of events—some unique to the year and some new twists on more “standard” events. So while it is not possible to write one list that covers all we do in this area, here is a list of some of the most common secondary events.

ICE BREAKER:
This event is usually held during the first week of school. It is an opportunity to get all the secondary students together in order to get to know one another and have some fun together. They might be on or off campus, and it might take one period or even half a day. This is the one event which is usually planned by teachers since it is held so early in the school year.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:
This can be a 7-12 event or two events—one 7-9 and one 10-12—depending on the size of the student body and the activities being planned. It might involve swimming or games or a variety of events.

VALENTINE’S PARTY:
This is another student-planned event which changes a lot from year to year. In spite of the “valentine” name, though, it is not for dating. It’s a big party for all secondary students. It’s often organized around a theme, like a “Hoedown” or “50’s Party.”

JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET:
This event is put on by the juniors to honor the seniors. Sophomores are invited in order to “learn the ropes” since they’ll be organizing the next year’s banquet. It’s usually a formal banquet, but the juniors choose different themes which can add quite a bit of variety. Each senior is honored in what is always a special event.

3-ON-3 BASKETBALL OR 5-ON-5 SOCCER:
We grouped these with the social events, because these are popular activities that all secondary students are welcome to join—not just teams. Each team is composed of girls and guys and sometimes even teachers, and all compete in a weekend tournament. These, too, are organized by students.

7TH-9TH GRADE PARTY:
This party is held at the same time as the Junior-Senior Banquet so that the 7th-9th graders have some fun that weekend, too. The theme and activities vary.

SPIRIT WEEK:
Usually in conjunction with our basketball tournament, we hold a spirit week to build class unity and school spirit. The competitions between classes include class cheers and crazy dress days (like Bad Hair Day or Famous Person Day). The festivities usually end with a Friday afternoon pep rally.

FIELD DAY:
Field Day is a K-12th grade event held sometime in the months of March, April or May. It is a day with no classes, and in which all the students and teachers interact in a variety of fun-filled games and activities. Some years, the timing of field day is a surprise, so that the students never know which morning it might be announced—canceling all classes (even tests!) and sending everyone out to have fun all day! More often, the date of field day is known in advance so that students and teachers can come fully prepared to enjoy themselves for the day. It is always a great opportunity for drawing the students of all grade levels together with each other and with the teachers for a day of fun and fellowship.

As you can see, between social events, sports, fine arts and spiritual activities, we have lots of enjoyable and worthwhile activities at the secondary school each year. In order to make sure that they also have some weekends to spend with family or just to catch up on rest and studies, we also plan about one “free” weekend—often even a three-day weekend—per quarter when no school activities may be planned. This is one way we try to help them develop good balance in their lives.
